Completed in 2002, this $1,000,000 project was a 3,000 square foot renovation and addition to the ground floor of an existing historic home in downtown Charleston. The existing home consisted of a large main house in the “Charleston Single House” style, with a kitchen house in the rear that had been rebuilt into a 2-story gallery space. The addition portion of the project consisted of connecting this gallery space to the main ground floor of the house by infilling an open parking area under a portion of the upper floors with a new modern kitchen addition. The kitchen features two 9 foot wide folding glass door systems that open out onto a picturesque brick patio and garden area. These openings were outfitted with large sliding screen systems and a large retractable awning which extends the kitchen eating area out onto the patio.
The renovation portion of the project involved first addressing waterproofing and damproofing issues inherent to ground floor historic spaces, and then renovating the existing layout to include a modern bathroom with white marble tile, a large shower area with glass block windows which allows natural light into the bathroom while shielding views of the adjacent alley. A modern closet was also created with wall to wall mirrors, dimmable color-corrected lighting fixtures and champagne colored cabinetry.
Acoustics were addressed by hanging a new ceiling on a system of springs designed by an engineer to isolate and reduce noise infiltration from the floor above.
This high-end and intricate project involved the creation many custom trim details and cabinetry resulting in a unique blend of modern and historic.
